TUESDAY, DECEMBER 5, 2023 – Saint-Sulpice Church (Paris 6th)

Sankta Lucia (Saint Lucy in Swedish, commonly called Lucia) is a festival celebrated on December 13th in honor of Saint Lucy of Syracuse. It marks, along with Advent, the beginning of the Christmas season. Traditionally, it was an important feast throughout Western Christendom, and today it is celebrated mainly in Scandinavia and Southern Europe, particularly in Sweden.

This concert is an opportunity for the Maîtrise Notre-Dame de Paris to pay tribute to and celebrate Sweden and its rich choral repertoire. The name Lucia comes from the Latin lux, lucis, meaning light, and light will indeed be the focus of this evening, preparing us for the coming of Christmas.

Saint-Eustache Church, Paris

Tuesday, October 10, 2023, 8:30 PM – Saint-Eustache Church, Paris (75)

The full Maîtrise will perform one of the most famous works in the entire sacred music repertoire: Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem.

For this season opening concert, the full Maîtrise will perform one of the most famous works in the entire sacred music repertoire: Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem, a piece full of gentleness, in its version transcribed for choir and grand organ by Yves Castagnet.

The composer himself wrote: “My Requiem, it has been said, does not express the fear of death; someone called it a lullaby of death. But that is how I feel about death: as a happy deliverance, an aspiration to happiness beyond, rather than a painful passage. This work thus presents itself as the accompaniment of the soul toward its consolation, its eternity.” This is an event not to be missed!
