Parisian and poet, supported by Saint Louis, Rutebeuf composed the Miracle of Theophilus around 1270.
It was then performed in the student quarter on the Montagne Sainte-Geneviève and represented at the Cloister portal on the north façade of Notre-Dame.
Alas, wretched and sorrowful,
What will become of me?
Earth, how can you
Bear or support me
When I have denied God? …
Lady full of grace,
Who reveals goodness to us,
In need, whoever calls on you,Is delivered from pain;
Whoever brings their heart to you
In the everlasting reign
Will have new joy;
Springing fountain
Delightful and wholesome,
Recall me to your Son.
