A disciple of Saint Francis, professor of theology at the University of Paris from 1248 to 1257, friend of Saint Thomas Aquinas, and General Minister of the Friars Minor in 1257, Saint Bonaventure introduced the prayer of the Angelus in their convents to honor the Incarnation of the Son of God three times a day.

This devotion quickly spread to Paris and then throughout the Church. The Angelus is the very first prayer recited every morning at the cathedral before the first Mass and every day at noon.

The Angel of the Lord declared unto Mary,
And she conceived of the Holy Spirit.
Behold the handmaid of the Lord.
Be it done unto me according to Your Word.
And the Word was made flesh,
And dwelt among us.

Hail Mary, full of grace,
The Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou amongst women,
And blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
Pray for us sinners,
Now and at the hour of our death.

Pray for us, O holy Mother of God.
That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray.
Pour forth, we beseech You, O Lord,
Your Grace into our hearts;
that as we have known the incarnation of Christ,
your Son by the message of an angel,
so by His passion and cross
we may be brought to the glory of His Resurrection.

Through the same Christ, our Lord.
Amen.
